My Little Pony Make Your Mark I Can Read!

The HarperCollins I Can Read! My Little Pony book series features pony characters from the Hasbro my little pony franchise. These books have been a big hit in my house because my children love the fifth generation of My Little Pony from the Netflix show Make Your Mark. How Accessible is The Language in the My Little Pony Books? The books are rated at level 1 and 2 of the I Can Read! series. I thought that this rating was too low because there are some difficult words to decode and I would have placed them all at level two or three. The names of places are on the longer side like Equestria but the children were already familiar with these from watching the TV show.  The biggest accessibility issue with these books are the "pony puns". Several equine word plays are used. For example, instead of everybody, anybody, nobody and somebody the books use everypony, anypony, nopony, somepony. The maritime area is called maretime bay, the 5 main ponies are called the mane 5. For emergen...

Inside Big Bright Feelings SEL Series

The Big Bright Feelings social emotional learning series is a set of picture books for young children written and illustrated by the British author Tom Percival. The latest release in the Big Bright Feelings series is Sammy Feels Shy (released July 2025).  My children were really excited to hear that our pre order of the new book had shipped.

I was drawn to the series because of the beautiful illustrations. The books shows children how to deal with their emotions in a direct and straight forward way making them easily accessible. I love the line in Ruby's Worry "Then Ruby did the best thing you can ever do if you have a worry... she talked about it"

The characters are relatable too, they aren't superheroes saving the world. The children depicted in the books find themselves in everyday situations that young readers can identify with.  Jealousy when a new friend joins the friendship group in Milos Monster. Disappointment when heavy snowfall means no one can attend her birthday party in Beas Bad Day.

The only exception to this is in Perfectly Norman where the main character Norman secretly has wings which he tries to hide. The wings are a metaphor for hiding your true self but this allegory may not be grasped by the youngest readers. In our house Tilda Tries Again and Ravi's Roar are our favourite books in the series and have been read over and over.

To celebrate the launch of Sammy Feels shy let's take a deep dive into the Big Bright Feelings series. This useful guide will tell you everything you need to know about the popular social emotional learning (SEL) series.

Are New Books Still Being Published In The Ruby's Worry Series?

Yes and I'm really happy that this SEL series is continuing to be updated, I would love to see a book about compromise, learning to share and conflict resolution. I can explain these ideas over and over but nothing makes it click more than having children see the situations play out in print.

Update: The title of an article from The Bookseller "Tom Percival on the final book in his Big Bright Feelings series and what comes next" suggests there will only be 10 books in this series, 11 with the World Book Day Special Edition Billy's Bravery. The full article is behind a paywall.
