My Little Pony Make Your Mark I Can Read!

The HarperCollins I Can Read! My Little Pony book series features pony characters from the Hasbro my little pony franchise. These books have been a big hit in my house because my children love the fifth generation of My Little Pony from the Netflix show Make Your Mark. How Accessible is The Language in the My Little Pony Books? The books are rated at level 1 and 2 of the I Can Read! series. I thought that this rating was too low because there are some difficult words to decode and I would have placed them all at level two or three. The names of places are on the longer side like Equestria but the children were already familiar with these from watching the TV show.  The biggest accessibility issue with these books are the "pony puns". How Much? VS How Many?

✅ How many donuts are in a small box?

✅ How much is a large box of donuts?

Many is used for countable nouns (things that we can count).

Much is used for uncountable nouns (things that we cannot count).

Money is an uncountable noun. When we ask "How much is a large box of donuts?" we really mean "How much money is a large box of donuts"

Dollars, yen and pounds are all countable nouns. You could say "How many dollars is a large box of donuts?" while gramatically correct it is not common to phrase the question in this way.

A simplified translation would be (this level is sufficient for the GTEC exam)

how much = いくら

how many = いくつ 何個 何枚 など

I'm from the UK, we use (pounds). In Europe they use (Euros). I usually see $ dollars used in speaking tests and this is the reason that I have used them here. But don't forget to take a moment to double check the currency symbol before giving an answer.

Part of the GTEC speaking exam involves interacting with others. This donut shop menu is the kind of information that students could be provided with and then asked questions about. The GTEC Test Prep Interacting with Others practice lessons bundle includes 15 more flyers with accompanying PowerPoint lesson and printable / digitally distributable pair work activities.
