Recipe Comprehension Quiz Pancakes

Cooking classes are a great way to learn English. If you don't understand the recipe the dish will not work. Food as a conversation topic is also a great ice breaker therefore being able to talk about food in English is a useful skill.
This short comprehension lesson is designed to be used before a practical cooking class, it encourages students to think about cooking vocabulary and identify important parts of a recipe. This activity can be used as listening comprehension with visual clues. I suggest first watching without subtitles and only enabling them if they are needed.

Vocabulary Check

First check the meaning of the following phrases. If students don't know these words let them watch the video to see if that makes the meaning clearer before giving them the answers.

4. batter consistency

5. take a spoonful

6. melt

7. coat the pan

8. portion out

An Easy Recipe For Making Pancakes in the Classroom

If you do not have self raising flour you can use 145g of plain flour and 1.5 teaspoons of baking powder.

Pancake Recipe Video Comprehension Questions

Try watching the pancake making video then answer the following questions.

1. Can you name all of the equipment?

2. Why do we coat the pan with butter?

3. How much batter is used per pancake?

4. How many pancakes can you make in the pan at one time?

5. What should the temperature of the pan be?

6. When should you flip the pancakes?

Many recipes online can be vague or assume some kind of cultural understanding that the reader does not have. Have you tried the Jam Sandwich writing composition activity? This lesson also uses cooking vocabulary and highlights the need for clear instructions in recipes.
