Recommended Chapter Book Series For Readers Ages 6-9

Following on from my previous post about first chapter books for young readers, I wanted to add these books which are aimed at slightly older children aged 6-9. They would all be good first chapter books, it is the content that makes them more suited to this slightly older age range, the language usage and vocabulary is easy and accessible for children moving on from graded readers.

Chapter Books For Mystery Lovers

Nate The Great by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat

Nate The Great is a long running series which started in the 1970s and it is still widely available. Nate and his dog Smudge solve simple mysteries. After the author's death in 2019 her son Andrew Sharmat continued writing the series. There are 30 books in the series. It is also available in Kindle Format.


Time Travel & History Adventures For Young Readers

Magic Tree House by Mary Pope Osborne 

Magic Tree House started in the 1990s, there are over 100 books in the series. Siblings Jack and Annie time-travel through a magic tree house to different places, eras and historical events.

The series was revamped and divided into three series in 2017 the main Magic Tree House series, Merlin Missions for older readers and the non fiction Fact Tracker series. This article from TL Tracker explains the changes and lists the books in order.

A Japanese anime adaptation based on the Japanese versions of The Magic Tree House books, directed by Nishikiori Hiroshi was released in 2011. As such it has become a popular English reading series in Japan.

Nostalgic First Chapter Books Parents Will Love

Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown

Flat Stanley is an American series started by Jeff Brown in 1964 and had had several authors and illustrators including the popular British illustrator Tony Ross. Stanley is a boy who gets flattened by a notice board and he stays flat. In his new form he is able to get through locked doors, be flown like a kite and be posted in an envelope. This 21 book series follows him on his adventures. Growing up in the UK, I was not familiar with this series but I have since heard about it many times when looking into first chapter books for young children.

Mummy Fairy and Me by Sophie Kinsella 

Mummy Fairy and Me Ella's Mummy can turn into a fairy but she is somewhat incompetent and often gets spells wrong resulting in mayhem. Fortunately, Ella is there to help out. This is a 4 book series. I was a big fan of the Shopaholic series so I was excited to see that Sophie Kinsella had made a move to children's books.


First Chapter Books For Kids Who Love Animal

Rabbit And Bear by Julian Gough

The Rabbit and Bear series features the developing friendship between a frustrated rabbit and a happy bear. This silly series mixes imperfect characters with wildlife facts and stories of friendship. 

The Critter Club by Callie Barkley 

The Critter Club is an animal rescue centre which was set up and is run by four friends. The girls that run the club are eight years old, making the 29 book series relatable for young audiences. The Critter Club series is still being published.
