My Little Pony Make Your Mark I Can Read!

The HarperCollins I Can Read! My Little Pony book series features pony characters from the Hasbro my little pony franchise. These books have been a big hit in my house because my children love the fifth generation of My Little Pony from the Netflix show Make Your Mark. How Accessible is The Language in the My Little Pony Books? The books are rated at level 1 and 2 of the I Can Read! series. I thought that this rating was too low because there are some difficult words to decode and I would have placed them all at level two or three. The names of places are on the longer side like Equestria but the children were already familiar with these from watching the TV show.  The biggest accessibility issue with these books are the "pony puns". Several equine word plays are used. For example, instead of everybody, anybody, nobody and somebody the books use everypony, anypony, nopony, somepony. Design An English Board Game Project

Japanese Senior High School Students were asked to design and create a board game for younger students to encourage them to speak in English. This hands-on ESL project is a great way to boost language skills and foster creativity.

This interactive project is a semester long ESL activity culminating in producing a physical board game. The English focused board came can then be taken to an elementary school where it is used to engage young learners through play. Additionally, these board games were showcased at the school's annual culture festival, providing students with an opportunity to present their work.

Semester Long English Board Game Project To Inspire Communication and Creativity

This activity was completed with members of the English Speaking Society (ESS club) but it can be used with students in an ESL classroom setting too. 

The English Board Game Creation Project consists of 10 structured lessons. It begins with exploring and analysing existing English language board games. Students then work together to plan and design their own English board game which promotes the use of the English language.

What Is Included In The English Board Game Creation Lesson Pack?

  • Lesson plans and work sheets. All teaching materials are provided in both English and Japanese to cater to varying skill levels.
  • Warm up conversation prompts. Each lesson starts with a set of conversation prompts designed to get students talking in English from the start of each session. 
  • Clear Learning objectives. Each lesson has a set of learning targets to guide students progress.

Encouraging English Communication Between Japanese Students 

Throughout this English Board Game Creation Project students are encouraged to use English to communicate with their peers. This project-based ESL activity not only strengthens ESL communication skills but also encourages team work, creativity and the practical application of English language skills.
