My Little Pony Make Your Mark I Can Read!

The HarperCollins I Can Read! My Little Pony book series features pony characters from the Hasbro my little pony franchise. These books have been a big hit in my house because my children love the fifth generation of My Little Pony from the Netflix show Make Your Mark. How Accessible is The Language in the My Little Pony Books? The books are rated at level 1 and 2 of the I Can Read! series. I thought that this rating was too low because there are some difficult words to decode and I would have placed them all at level two or three. The names of places are on the longer side like Equestria but the children were already familiar with these from watching the TV show.  The biggest accessibility issue with these books are the "pony puns". Several equine word plays are used. For example, instead of everybody, anybody, nobody and somebody the books use everypony, anypony, nopony, somepony. The maritime area is called maretime bay, the 5 main ponies are called the mane 5. For emergen...

After reading A Little SPOT on Halloween from the Diane Alber series we were excited to try making our own positive pumpkins. Positive pumpkins are pumpkins decorated with postive, encouraging words. Confidence SPOT who is round, orange and often mistaken for a pumpkin is keen to make positive pumpkins a new Halloween tradition.

We were excited to get started on our pumpkins and spent the drive to nursery school discussing what words we might add to our pumpkins at home that evening. Terrific is a favourite adjective in our household. It is the buzz word of the Alphablocks tea drinking, letter T character so everything here is Tea-riffic.

I made these positive pumpkin worksheets before I realised that there is a code to get the Diane Alber ones for free at the back of the Little SPOT on Halloween book.
First we, painted the big pumpkin with water colours and had a go at colouring the smaller ones with the scribble spot crayons that we made recently.

Little Spot on Halloween is our book of the week.

I had these small plastic dessert pots that had contained orange sorbet. Technically, they are an orange but I think they look very pumpkin like. We practiced writing our postive words on the blank mini pumpkin page and then copied them in Sharpie onto the sorbet pots.

We are keen to also carve a positive pumpkin but I dont often see the orange gourds in the shops here. Perhaps, a positive kabocha instead?
